EXTRA Program Overview
The EXTRA program offers a unique opportunity for players who demonstrate strong desire, skills, and ability to play soccer in a more competitive environment. Typically, an EXTRA team consists of the top 10% of players in each division. Players receive advanced training from highly experienced coaches, often with certifications that meet or exceed those of club soccer. Teams compete against other EXTRA teams in neighboring AYSO Regions, including San Bernardino, L.A., and Orange Counties. The season generally includes 10 games and playoffs for qualifying teams.
Commitment and Participation
Participation in the EXTRA program requires a significant commitment from both parents and players. This includes attending all practices and games, and demonstrating responsibility towards coaches and teammates. Many EXTRA teams also compete in tournaments, which may involve travel and weekend matches. The team is financially self-supporting, so fundraising is required, and parents are expected to participate. Teams must also provide a 3-person referee crew and team volunteers. EXTRA truly demands extra dedication, time, and travel.
EXTRA Criteria
Players: To be eligible, players must attend a tryout. Tryouts are open to all players in the participating division. The number of teams formed each year depends on the availability of qualified volunteer coaches and skilled players. The final decision on the number of teams is made by the Regional Commissioner and Special Programs Coordinator.
Coaches: Interested coaches who meet the prerequisites can apply online. Please review the EXTRA guidelines before submitting an application.
Referees: Each team must have at least three certified referees at the Regional or Intermediate level. These referees will officiate matches during the league season, playoffs, and tournaments. Teams must have the required referees before the start of the EXTRA season. Courses are available throughout the year in various locations, including Fontana.
Games and Tournaments
The EXTRA season is divided into two parts:
Fall Season (League Play):
Runs from September to November, with fees covered by the region. The season typically includes 10+ games, with half at home and the rest away in surrounding regions, including San Bernardino, L.A., and Orange Counties. While most games are on Saturdays, some may be scheduled during the week or on Sundays.
Spring Season (Tournament Play):
Runs from January to June, involving travel to tournaments in surrounding regions and possibly out of state. These tournaments often include games on both Saturdays and Sundays. Tournament fees are not covered by EXTRA registration and are the responsibility of each team. EXTRA teams are required to participate in the annual Speedway Classic Tournament and provide volunteers for the event.
